Sam watched the encounter through the large window in the lobby of The Santuary. Jake and Frank were a little quicker at locating Bryce than she had hoped. Her chances of talking to Elton’s son had just dwindled. And the halls were always filled so she couldn’t even pick the lock on Bryce’s room which she discovered was on the second floor. She didn’t want Jake to see her there so she would have to come back. She needed a plan.

An easel with a poster near the front desk announced that the next afternoon’s art class featured a nude drawing. All artists interested could draw or paint a nude model. It had to take a certain type person to expose herself for hours on end while men oogled her, Sam thought.

A woman duck-walked to the front desk. She had white hair styled like a Gibson girl but stark black eyebrows that could have been drawn by one of the artists. Sam strolled a bit closer. The woman’s name was Clarice St. John and her badge said she was the administrator.

“What are we going to do for a model?” Clarice moaned. “It’s such short notice.”

The young woman behind the desk was thumbing through a rolodex. “Maybe if we up the payment to one thousand dollars.”

“It’s one day’s notice, Monique. I don’t care what we pay, just get me someone. And don’t use that agency any more. They aren’t reliable.”

Sam approached the desk. “I couldn’t help but overhear. I’m actually here about the modeling job.”

Clarice stepped back and did a quick assessment of Sam. “Yes, you just might work.”

Sam stammered out, “I wouldn’t be the model. I’m an agent for my friend. I only stopped by to get a brochure and contact information so I don’t have any of her stock photos with me, but I can assure you…”

“She’s hired,” Clarice said with a resigned sigh. “Have her here at noon tomorrow.”

That was pretty easy, Sam thought as she rushed to her Jeep.

Now all I have to do is convince Jackie.
